Fully & Semi Frameless Glass Balustrades
With a broad range of attractive options tastefully designed to suit any space, our robust glass balustrade solutions offer safety, high-quality, flexibility and affordability, and will help ensure an unimpeded view from your property. They are also easy to maintain following installation and can be considered for the likes of mezzanines, balconies, staircases, pool fencing, decks and other outdoor entertainment spaces.
Fully frameless
When it comes to balustrades, glass is not this only option. Timber and metal, for instance, are common alternatives. While these options do bring certain advantages, you cannot escape the negative impact on arguably your property’s most valuable assets – its view.
Conversely, an entirely frameless glass balustrade solution has one very obvious benefit. Because the toughened glass panels used are held together by clamps or spigots, the need for metal steel posts is negated, allowing views to remain unobstructed, no matter where or for what purpose the balustrades are installed.
And of course, it doesn’t hurt that frameless glass balustrade solutions offer an aesthetically pleasing finish that’s elegant, sleek and super-modern. In terms of complementing the existing look of your space, the glass used can be clear or tinted with the colour of your choice. As well as visual reasons, the right option will reduce glare and help maximise privacy.
At Ultimate Glass, our frameless balustrades are built using toughened safety glass panels, with advantages including durability, ease-of-installation, and low ongoing maintenance requirements, including easy cleaning.
Semi-Frameless
A semi-frameless glass balustrade option has the benefit of providing a more affordable solution. Stainless steel or aluminium powder coated posts are positioned between each glass panel, with handrails fitted in many cases to provide a strong support structure that keeps the balustrades securely in-place.
The glass used in semi-frameless solutions is not as thickened when compared with the panels used in frameless structures, as they do not form such a vital component of the overall structural strength.
From a visual perspective, this is still a fantastic option, thanks to its ability to combine the stability of traditional systems, with the streamlined and minimalist appeal of a more modern frameless alternative.

FAQS

How much do glass balustrades cost?
This question is tough to answer accurately without knowing more of the specifics. Glass balustrade solutions come in various styles, shapes and sizes. The cost of your new or replaced system will therefore depend on multiple factors, and the distinct requirements of your specific project.
Factors impacting cost might include the size of the area the balustrades need to cover, and the size of glass panels required, as well as things like the fittings, finishes and accessories needed to tailor a solution to meet client needs, expectations and budget. The space – i.e. kitchen, bathroom, laundry etc – also has an impact on cost, as does the size, look, feel and colour (i.e. clear or tinted glass).
For those hoping to find a ballpark figure, at Ultimate Glass the costs of our standard frameless balustrade options range from $375 to $425 per metre. Furthermore, professional installation labour costs should also be factored into your budgetary planning when deciding which options to go for.
Of course, the best solutions are always the tailored ones. Designs can be customised to perfectly match your existing space and requirements. Where custom-designed solutions are required, this tends to increase the costs to somewhere between $675 and $755 per metre. Fortunately, our experts are on-hand to listen to your needs, assess the space, and develop a solution to suit, with a more definite idea on cost offered at that stage.
By manufacturing all glass panels in-house, we can pass significant cost savings to our customers, by cutting out any extra expenses associated with third-party engagement for this purpose. Ultimate Glass prices are therefore amongst the most reasonable you will find anywhere in Australia.

Does a glass balustrade need a handrail?
The combination of glass balustrades and handrails makes perfect sense when you consider the primary goal of this type of solution is to protect the safety of a building’s occupants. Handrails provide guidance and support, for increased safety, making them an ideal match for glass balustrades.
One area where legal requirements for handrails tend to be essential for compliance is the staircase. Australian regulations expect all staircases to be fitted with handrails, unless a fixed structure is in-place within a 10cm distance. And while many view this as impacting negatively on the overall aesthetic, safety must always be prioritised above style.
While most staircases found in residential buildings are only expected to install one handrail, commercial staircases of more than 1.2m in width are required to have a handrail fitted at either side.
Another common scenario where handrails are recommended is where balustrading is installed along handicap ramps where the slope exceeds 150mm.
How thick should glass balustrade be?
The answer to this question really depends on its use. For example, a minimum thickness of 6mm is permitted for infill panels, 8mm for structural panels, and 10mm for structural cantilever panels that are also 12mm thick (i.e. rigid panels that extend horizontally and are supported only at one end.) So whether you’re looking for a solution for a staircase, balcony, decking area or pool, the required and recommended thicknesses will be different.
The goal is to ensure a solution that is adequately durable, with the strength required to offer acceptable levels of safety. Over and above the thickness, toughened glass can also be laminated, fortifying it with extra strength and resilience in the event of any potentially damaging impact.
Are glass balustrades safe?
All property owners with balconies, staircases, pool fences, decking and other outdoor entertainment spaces should consider glass balustrades to be one of the safest options at their disposal. They are designed and built to last, with national and local regulations and standards in place to ensure they protect your family from danger. With ease of maintenance following installation, one of the only ongoing responsibilities for the owner to manage is the regular check for any signs of damage. It probably goes without saying that cracked or broken glass panes should be replaced immediately!
Which glass is best for balcony?
There are several key considerations to make when installing glass balustrades specifically on a balcony. Overall look, safety and durability will all play a part in helping decide on the most appropriate option. The potential for sleek, modern and aesthetically pleasing results are clear. The benefits of toughened safety glass panels used in conjunction with handrails where necessary also speak for themselves, by ensuring the safety of balcony users. Add to that list the durability of your balcony balustrades, which is another strong and important consideration. Most importantly, glass balustrade strength and quality does not deteriorate through exposure to the elements as alternative materials might, and unlike options such as timber will not weather or weaken over time.
What is the Australian Standard for balustrade?
Like all applications of glass in construction, frameless glass balustrades are legally required to meet strict standards and regulations, to ensure compliance and a completely effective solution. This is something we take very seriously.
All Ultimate Glass panels are made using toughened safety glass. The toughened glass panels used for are designed and thoroughly tested to ensure all Australian Standards are easily met and exceeded. On top of this, various different standards exist across the various states and territories, so it’s important that you talk to an expert who can advise on exactly what requirements you need to consider.
We are committed to ensuring all designs and installations represent ultimate compliance with all local and national standards. You can therefore rest assured that your new balustrade installation will successfully gain all necessary approvals from the relevant local council or authority.
