Splashbacks offer a practical finish that perfectly balances functionality with design, and creates a surface that’s easy to clean. Glass is a highly effective material to be used for these purposes, especially when compared with tiles, or even worse with no splashback at all! Glass has a classy and shiny finish that looks great and can be used to make a statement that will really add character to the space.

A big advantage of glass over acrylic is that it can withstand higher temperatures, and is therefore suitable for more uses, such as behind stovetops. Acrylic is also more susceptible to scratching than a glass finish (meaning glass stays looking brand new for longer), and while it is an option that’s available in pretty much every colour, it doesn’t offer the same luxury finish as glass.

Many swear by acrylic solutions for their malleability and ease of personalisation. However, when entrusted into expert hands, it’s highly possible to personalise a glass splashback too. So, while some claim acrylics enable greater opportunities for creativity, glass is nowhere near as restrictive as some people believe, if you’re working with the right people.

Glass is also the clear winner when it comes to splashback maintenance. While dirt collects on pretty much every type of surface, glass is one of the easiest to keep shiny and clean. All it takes is a quick wipe with a warm damp cloth (and perhaps a little soap), and your glass splashback will once again appear sparkling and new!

Then there are cost considerations. Acrylic splashbacks tend to carry a lower price tag than their glass counterparts, making them a more realistic option for those on tighter budgets. Having said that, glass splashbacks are not ridiculously unaffordable either, so it’s well worth exploring all options.

A glass splashback is pretty much your safest option when considering the hotter applications it is likely to be used for. Glass can be toughened, meaning improved heat resistance. This makes it the perfect solution to be placed behind a hob or close to an oven, with no concerns of heat generated resulting in splashback cracks.

To give you an idea, toughened glass has the ability to resist temperatures of up to 400°C, while acrylics tend not to be suitable for scenarios where heat exposure is likely to exceed 160°C.

The simplest solution is, of course, to install your new glass splashback on top of your existing tiles. For this to happen, a smooth and straight surface is essential for proper adherence of the splashback.

Consider bathroom and shower panels as an example. There is no real need for toughened glass to be used in these situations from a temperature perspective, and acrylic splashbacks can easily be fitted over the top of existing tiles. This will allow you to avoid the messy and timeconsumig process of removing tiles first.

Having said that, glass splashbacks can also be installed over existing tiles with relatively minimal fuss, providing all tiles are securely attached to the wall, with no cracks that could inhibit adhesion.

Top tip! Because splashbacks are glued onto walls, consider taking some time at the start of the process to roughen up your tiles using a grinder. This will provide the glue with a rough surface to bond to, which often leads to a more secure end result.

Absolutely not. Because it is so durable, as well as being non-porous and non-absorbent, glass is the ideal splashback material to ensure a solution that is easy-to-clean, and is naturally resistant to bacteria and mould growth.

Warm soapy water and a clean cloth should be all you need to remove stubborn oil or grease stains found in the kitchen, while regular glass cleaners used in conjunction with a soft cloth will successfully eradicate other dirt and debris. To avoid streaks, you can take the extra step of spraying a homemade solution containing 20% white vinegar and 80% water, before buffing with a paper towel to create that extra shine.
